The best part about weddings is seeing everyone smiling from ear to ear and celebrating the special bond that two people share. From the getting ready session and the first look to the ceremony and the grand exit - weddings come with so many other picture-perfect moments. And as a wedding photographer, I aim to capture every moment - posed or candid as best as I can. This summer Regatta Place wedding in Newport Rhode Island, was yet another great wedding for me to document! The couple was an absolute delight to work with, and it was also a wonderful opportunity for me to head out to a new location.
Meeting The Couple
The wedding wasn’t the first time I was meeting the couple. Prior to their Regatta Place wedding, I got to know one groom pretty well before his wedding, which helped us establish a bond before I even photographed the wedding. Only months before he wed, he asked me to do some corporate publicity photography for his company that was about the launch. I traveled to his office in the Brooklyn Navy Yard and to his family's Adirondack camp to photograph him and his employees. I found it really easy to collaborate with Oscar on this project, so I was extremely excited to photograph the wedding.
I was referred to these two by another couple of mine. And although they were well familiar with my work, I was still nervous about photographing their wedding. I have to admit that I am nervous when I shoot any wedding.
However, it is the summer season that grips me a bit more. I just knew their wedding was going to be remarkable. I adore both of them, and I just wanted to give my best and bring justice to their wedding pictures. The moment I started photographing their rehearsal dinner at the Tennis Hall of Fame the night before, my nerves were completely gone! Their guests and family members in attendance were all so welcoming and gracious and made me feel at ease.
A Summer Regatta Place Wedding in Newport, Rhode Island
While weddings have this tradition where the couples are hidden from each other during the getting ready period, I have always wanted to photograph a couple helping each other out as they get ready for their big day. And I finally got this opportunity! In the middle of all the wedding chaos, I love taking getting-ready photos of couples! For me, this seems much more natural than the tradition where the couple is hidden away from each other the night before the wedding or prior to their formal wedding ceremony.
In a quiet room with no one around (of course, except me!) they helped each other get ready for their Regatta Place wedding. They looked sharp in their black and white tuxedos and also took turns to put on one another's cufflinks and settle each other's ties. This sweet one-on-one moment offered a little sneak peek into what happens before a couple walks down the aisle and also gave them the chance to spend some quality time before their wedding day festivities! It was so wonderful to see the couple taking care of each other and making sure that they looked their best.
Even though my typical stomping grounds are the lush Hudson Valley, this was my first time photographing a Regatta Place wedding in Rhode Island. The Regatta Place is set on a dock on Goat Island in Newport, Rhode Island. This exclusive Regatta Place wedding property offers beautiful settings for wedding receptions and is also a perfect waterfront location for a sail-away wedding!
The weather was warm and sunny, which was perfect for this summer wedding. The ceremony took place on a dock under a striped tent with sweeping views of shining blue waters and luxury yachts on either side. The natural light that flowed through the tented ceremony on the dock was stunning as it created gorgeous patterns on the aisle!
Not just the couple, but even the guests were so well-dressed with their summer dresses at this Regatta Place wedding. The nuptials were anything but customary, with the officiant cracking jokes and making the couple and the guests laugh. Thanks to the officiant, I got some really fun pictures with the lovely couple and guests in their true element. After a bit of laughter and shedding a few happy tears, it was now time to celebrate and get the party started!
The couple's wedding reception was held under another tent on the dock, with bright wooden lanterns hanging from the ceiling. Long tables were placed at the venue, with breathtaking decor that matched the wedding’s theme. Boston Event Lighting and Laura Marshall Flowers beautifully crafted the couple's Regatta Place reception space, which also included a disco ball! With guests seated around, loved ones took to the podium, shared some funny stories, and toasted to the newlyweds.
As the sun began to set, I knew it was the perfect time to steal the grooms away for some romantic sunset portraits! Before their morning ceremony, I saw a field close by, tucked to the side of the parking lot at their REgatta Place wedding and immediately knew the sunset would stream lovely through there. And luckily, my location-scouting skills paid off for some wonderful couple sunset pictures surrounded by refreshing nature and its beauty!
