Scenic Surprise Marriage Proposal in New Paltz NY
This romantic surprise marriage proposal in New Paltz NY, was looking like it was going to happen according to plan and I was all set to photograph it. The park, Testimonial Gateway at the Mohonk preserve near New Paltz, was free of people and the sun was slowly setting in the sky. I could see Kelty and Danielle walking toward the designated location where Kelty was intending to drop to her knee and propose marriage and I was in the perfect location to capture it in my camera.

Then all of a sudden another couple approached from another path and started walking towards the same location. Adrenaline flooded me and I started muttering, “Keep Going, Keep GOING” under my breath but they stop right at the arch for some selfies – right where Kelty is about to propose to Danielle. Fuck. I can see Kelty and Danielle approaching to my right. I make a last-minute decision to dash to the unsuspecting couple and ask them to move. They look at my crazed face suspiciously as I walk/run to them and say in my loudest whisper, “a couple is almost here who are going to propose marriage. It is a surprise. Would you mind moving for a minute?!!”
They gladly oblige and I run back into position just in time for Kelty and Danielle to approach – and for it to start raining. Fuckity, fuck, fuck. Rain was not in the forecast. I have two very expensive cameras strapped to me and they are totally exposed to the falling drops. Thankfully it’s only a drizzle and our designated location by the arch, at the very least, provides some shelter for Kelty’s proposal.
For me, there was nothing to do other than take a deep breath and capture what was unfolding in front of me. After Kelty proposes and points to me in the distance photographing I know I can come out of “hiding” and I rush for the cover of the arch. My cameras are fine and the rain quickly passes and we go for a walk along the beautiful Testimonial Gateway House path, photographing along the way.
These two were as lovely as the night. Yes, they were happy and excited to have just committed to each other but there was also a calmness to them as well. They seemed to have an equal appreciation for each other and were equally sure of their mutual path forward. For me, I had no doubt their mutual support will bring them to the highest heights together. It was such an honor to photograph their surprise marriage proposal in New Paltz and witness their connection first hand.
